Burst pipe? The first 5 minutes decide the damage.
A split pipe can put out gallons a minute. The difference between a mess and a disaster is usually whether somebody knew where the shut-off was. Read this now, on a dry day, and you'll own that five minutes.
The five minutes, in order
- Shut off the main. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops. Where it lives, see below if you don't already know.
- Open the lowest faucet in the house, a basement sink or an outdoor spigot, plus a tub upstairs. The lines drain down and the pressure driving the leak dies.
- Protect the water heater. If the house water is off for long, an electric unit can burn out its elements heating an emptying tank: flip its breaker off. On a gas unit, turn the control to pilot.
- Move what water ruins. Rugs, boxes, electronics, anything under or downhill from the leak. Towels on hardwood immediately; wood floors forgive minutes, not hours.
- Take photos. The leak, the water, the damage as you found it. Your insurance adjuster will want them, and it costs you thirty seconds.

Where the shut-off hides in Ozarks houses
- At the meter, near the street. Under a round or rectangular lid in the yard. The valve inside sometimes wants a meter key or a wrench; a cheap meter key in the garage is good insurance.
- Where the line enters the house. Basement wall, crawlspace entry, or a utility room, usually on the street-facing side. Most houses have a valve here, and it's the one to use if you have it.
- On a well: at the pressure tank. There's a valve at the tank, and killing the breaker for the well pump stops the source entirely.
Winter is when it happens
Most burst pipes here are freeze splits, and the cruel part is the timing: the pipe freezes overnight, then bursts as it thaws. In a hard cold snap, let vulnerable faucets drip, open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls, and don't shut heat off entirely in rooms with plumbing. If a faucet quits in a freeze, treat it as a frozen line and act before the thaw: open the faucet, warm the area gently if you safely can, never with an open flame, and call it in.
What happens when Joe arrives
He finds the split, tells you plainly what failed and why, and gives you the price before the repair starts. If the freeze or the age of the line means more of it is at risk, you'll hear that straight, with the reasoning, and nothing gets sold through fear.
