First: stop the water
- Find your main shutoff. Usually where the line enters the house, in a basement, crawlspace, or utility room. If getting to it means walking through water that has reached an outlet, a cord, an appliance or the electrical panel, stay out and call the water utility and the electric company; in Springfield, City Utilities handles both. On a well system, turn off the breaker for the well pump first, then close the valve on the house side of the pressure tank. The valve at the meter near the street belongs to the water utility; if the house valve won't close, call them or us.
- Turn it off: a round handle clockwise until it stops, a lever a quarter turn until it sits across the pipe.
- Open the lowest faucet in the house to relieve pressure and drain the lines down.
- Move what you can out from under the water, and get towels on hardwood fast.

What counts as an emergency
- Water you cannot stop: burst or split pipe, failed fitting, gushing supply line.
- Sewage backing up into the house.
- No water at all, especially on a well.
- A leaking water heater tank, or no hot water when the house needs it.
- Frozen pipes in a hard freeze, before they split.
